I rocked the nominations!

Oh yeah, baby! Here's a comparison:

Best Motion Picture of the Year
The Actual Nominees:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button YES
Frost/Nixon YES
Milk YES
The Reader NO
Slumdog Millionaire YES

4 out of 5. I did NOT see The Reader coming in any way, shape or form. It wasn't even on my backup list. Pity about The Dark Knight, but then I guess it's not surprising.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Richard Jenkins for The Visitor YES
Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon YES
Sean Penn for Milk YES
Brad Pitt for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button YES
Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler YES

5 out of 5. I kicked this category's ass.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Anne Hathaway for Rachel Getting Married YES
Angelina Jolie for Changeling YES
Melissa Leo for Frozen River YES
Meryl Streep for Doubt YES
Kate Winslet for The Reader YES...sort of.

I got 5 out of 5 for the actresses here, but I picked the wrong movie for Kate Winslet. I thought she'd be nominated for Revolutionary Road, since everything has been putting her in the supporting category for The Reader. That is not my fault.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Josh Brolin for Milk YES
Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder YES
Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt YES
Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight YES
Michael Shannon for Revolutionary Road NO

4 out of 5. Go Robert Downey Jr! Yeah baby! I lost my bet to Mr Ruby Slippers, who insisted that no one from Slumdog Millionaire would be nominated. Sorry Dev Patel, welcome Michael Shannon; who are you?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams for Doubt YES
Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona YES
Viola Davis for Doubt YES
Taraji P. Henson for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button NO
Marisa Tomei for The Wrestler YES

4 out of 5. Colour me hugely surprised at the transferral of Kate Winslet in The Reader. I didn't see that spot opening. I did predict that Taraji P. Henson would get it IF there was one, though.

Best Achievement in Directing
Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire YES
Stephen Daldry for The Reader NO
David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button YES
Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon YES
Gus Van Sant for Milk YES

4 out of 5. These are the same as Best Picture, so I didn't see The Reader coming here either. I also didn't predict the lack of Clint love.

Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen
Frozen River (2008): Courtney Hunt NO
Happy-Go-Lucky (2008): Mike Leigh NO
In Bruges (2008): Martin McDonagh NO
Milk (2008): Dustin Lance Black YES
WALL·E (2008): Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter YES

Ok, so I only got 2 for 5 here. I wasn't as interested in this category, though...

Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008): Eric Roth, Robin Swicord YES
Doubt (2008/I): John Patrick Shanley YES
Frost/Nixon (2008): Peter Morgan YES
The Reader (2008): David Hare NO
Slumdog Millionaire (2008): Simon Beaufoy YES

4 out of 5 here; much easier to predict since most of these are Best Picture nominees. Man, if only I'd seen The Reader coming!

Anyone else get some guesses right? What do you think of the nominees? One thing's for damn sure: I have to go see The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire, Benjamin Button, Milk, Frost/Nixon, Doubt, Rachel Getting Married, Revolutionary Road, Changeling and The Wrestler to have any idea of what should win. That's a lot of heavy movies in a month...

  2. I actually thought about you this morning as I was reading the list of nominees and realizing that you got many of them spot on! I love that you got Robert Downey Jr right because that just didn't occur to me at all (as I mentioned in my last post!!) I always wonder why Leonardo DiCaprio manages to get shut out. He's such a talented actor and he always, always gets passed over. It's a shame.

  4. Thanks, guys. I took some chances but they paid off!

    GO DOWNEY JR!!!

Jest, at least eo got nominated for Blood Diamond. But yeah, he was so blatantly in-your-face snubbed for Titanic...and many other things! Oh and he does have that 1993 nom for Gilbert Grape.

    Thanks, Sarah and Amanda!
